Thought I'd have a go at some new sounds. There are a bunch of engine etc. sounds in the game, which aren't used in the 3 pre-defined sound profiles for trucks. So, new mod directory, create appropriate structure and copy one of the standard profiles, then change the filenames, alter the truck's definition file to point to the new profile, and lo, in-game I have new engine sounds. Great. OK, next up a new horn. After some messin' with different things that refused to play ball, I have horn5.ogg (hmmm. must check that's not already used somewhere - I thought there were just horn1 thru horn4), and it's 16 bit mono PCM in ogg format as per the other sounds. Plays fine on media players, but in-game, the horn button makes no noise.
Apart from the possibility that "horn5" is already in use as a name, anyone care to guess why? It's in the right place (I think): sounds\truck\ext\horn5.ogg and sounds\truck\int\horn5.ogg.

well, changing the filename fixed it.
Anyone know if you can fix a truck to have a particular engine? The engine sounds are part of the truck not part of the engine.

yes, you can assign sounds for a particular truck by changing the numbers in their definition files...by default, the game has 3 different sound options (sound0, sound1, sound2), but you can add more...first, put the .ogg files of your new sounds in the sound\truck\int and \ext folders and label them however you want, using numbers other than 0, 1, or 2...you can put as many sounds as you like in that folder...
next, open the def\vehicle\sound folder and using one of the .sii files as a template, create a new one and replace the data with the names of your new sound files where applicable...you'll get a better feel for it once you open one of the .sii files and have a look...than name the .sii files something other than 0, 1 or 2...
now, if you want your new sounds in a particular truck, open it's definition file and change the sdata numbers...
clear as mud...lol

yep, done all that, made a new sound profile, got the truck using it.
The point was I also added a couple of MAN engines to the game, including the 18-litre V10 and the new 680hp V8. The new sound profile uses sounds which seem to me more like an engine with lots of cylinders :-)
Problem is, you can't tie that sound profile to the engine, so it changes when you buy the new engine, as it's defined in the truck definition. The other possibility would be a special-edition truck fitted with the engine... but the trucks seem to by default come with the basic minimum engine, for which the sounds are gonna be wrong.

yeah, there's no tying a specific sound to a specific engine...that would be nice if we could...
